Would you believe if I told you that in the UK 47% of people considered a career change according to a survey involving 1000 people, conducted a couple of years ago by the London School of Business and Finance?  55% of the survey population working in London planned to switch careers in two years.

According to a report published by the U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics this year, the median number of years that workers had been with their current employer was 4.2 years in January 2018. This number suggests that workers may switch jobs at least 10 times during their lifetime.

Naturally, not all of these job changes lead to a career change, and although changing careers has its benefits, people tend to wait at least one or two years before making the decision and the necessary steps.

Some consider a career change due to financial necessity, or because they feel burnout, others realise that the professional field they work in no longer gives them the job satisfaction they are looking for. Recognising the lack of appreciation or that something is wrong is the first step and usually, the easiest one to take. That doesn’t mean it is easy, it only says that introducing a change of that magnitude requires more thought and effort.

When job dissatisfaction can be linked to circumstances in the workplace, often the real reason is the misalignment with personality or the passion that drives one forward. We all know that a job that enables self-actualisation increases the level of engagement and commitment. Although self-actualisation means something different to each of us. And because it is so different, the way how people choose to switch careers is also different.

Recognising that we are not in the right place at the right time is indeed not a pleasant experience. The doubts, disappointment over the lost time and opportunities can be exhausting, and it takes time to recover and start planning. It feels like getting back to the drawing board.

Now you can imagine, what it is like sitting at your desk or at a table in your favourite cafe in front of a blank sheet of paper.

What can you do? You already know that the job you were or are still doing is not you. It is just not you. What direction should you take?  Such a decision will have an impact on your life for many years to come.

  • Should you be cautious or more adventurous?

Based on conversations with people from all walks of life in various industries, I can tell you that the very first step to take is to look into yourself.

#1 Find out what makes you tick

Is it helping other people, or generating ideas? Is it making things work better or analysing information and summarising the conclusions? Is it giving advice to decision makers or making the decisions yourself? Do you like to oversee multiple processes and steps or to focus on a single area and dig deep so you can be an expert of that particular field?

Do you prefer working with people or systems? Are you a team player or an individual contributor who excels at generating results and enjoys reaping the benefits alone? Do you feel charitable with your time and efforts or get excited when you imagine counting the money coming in.

#2 Find out which jobs give you the shivers

Understand the labour market information and make a list of all the roles that tick the boxes. You already know what you are looking for, you just don’t see the matching job title yet. Look for job ads and information about the various professional careers on the internet. Talk to your friends or find new friends and connections in the area of your interest. Engage in conversations which help you better understand the characteristics of the jobs you are interested in doing in the future. Find a community of people thinking about a career change. Talk to a career coach.

#3 Build your path

Once you have a list of at least five roles that tick the boxes, list what education, skills and capabilities are needed. Find out what the entry level requirements are for that professional field and gather all your existing experiences, knowledge and skills. Select the transferable skills and list them. Find out how you can use these transferable skills to balance any educational requirements.

Make a decision on what you have and what you need to develop and plan time for developing the necessary knowledge and skills.

#4 Walk your path with confidence

If you catch yourself dipping in your perceived past failures or getting lost in the ‘what if this or that happens tomorrow’ labyrinth, you have already lost your connection to the present; you stopped being in the now. You create illusions for yourself and make yourself believe those illusions are real. How can one accomplish being in the now? Harness the power of now.

I am no Yoda or a Jedi Master for that matter, but when it comes to being in the now, I definitely am more than just a padawan. Being in the now is not easy, I have been practising the power of now and developing my skills in that field for many years and still learn about myself.

What is so special about being in the now? Why the fuss?

If you catch yourself dipping in your perceived past failures or getting lost in the ‘what if this or that happens tomorrow’ labyrinth, you have already lost your connection to the present; you stopped being in the now. It may just be a matter of seconds, and your mind starts drifting toward the sea of what was or what could be. From that point on, you don’t think about solutions anymore; you stop being creative. Instead, you create illusions for yourself and make yourself believe those illusions are real.

Being creative and being able to see clearly what resources you have available is essential for managing your life and making sure you stand victorious in the face of adversities. You will face challenges, we all do.

Being in the now means that you are free from illusions, it means that you see life for what it is and live it when it happens. You don’t miss opportunities and don’t run from the difficulties either. The latter may not sound so good, I know.

So, how can one accomplish being in the now? I have tips for you how to harness the power of now.

First, breathe.

Yep, you heard me well. Whenever you feel anxious about tomorrow, breathe in and breathe out, slowly.

Be conscious of your thoughts.

They can act like funny little elves and cause trouble in your mind in no time. Be aware that you are not your thoughts, be mindful that you have power over your thoughts and you and only you can teach them how to behave.

Spend less time judging.

It may sound a bit harsh, and you may think you are not judgmental, I am not saying you are. I mean that we all spend a significant amount of time setting expectations. We want things around us to happen in specific ways. We visualise things happening in particular ways. While I do believe in the power of visualisation, expectations make things harder. Here you can find 5 useful tips to successfully change your habit.

Stop overthinking your performance.

Don’t stop adding or creating value and don’t stop being demanding when it comes to the quality of your work. However, stop freaking out about your performance and how others see your performance or how certain things look.

Walk with your eyes open.

Have you ever had a walk in the park and had no idea whether the leaves on the trees were green or amber? I bet you were so deep in your own thoughts that you forgot to enjoy the nature around you. The very nature which could have instantly lift you up.

Being in the now also means that you dedicate time to connect with your surroundings. I love taking long walks in London. I love the buildings, the architecture and the people.

If something is bothering you, accept it.

Not the thing that bothers you. Accept that it exists. Accept that it found its way to your mind and started to dance around in there like your mind was its very own ballroom.

Once you acknowledge the existence of a problem that bothers you, you give yourself a chance to think about solutions and bang; you are in creative mode again.

More importantly, enjoy every single day because you only live once. Well, according to some theories.

Find ways how to avoid things that hold you back

Making a couple of good moves may be easy but repeating success poses a series of whole new challenges. Looking at all those successful people around you may make you wonder whether you are on the right track.

Such thoughts are beneficial when it comes to checking on your progress and the overall direction of your life, but if you spend too much time pondering over your past failures or actions you label as failures, you might find yourself in the passive zone.

The passive zone is a period in your life, which might last hours or days, even weeks or months, and during that time you slow down; or even worse the fear that you cannot meet the expectations will paralyse you. 

What are these things that hold you back?

You probably failed in the past in a particular field, or someone told you that you failed.

When it comes to failure, it is better to step back a little and think about what failure means to you. Some see failure as a dreadful thing and associate the lack of success with it; and while this is partly right, failure itself can be rewarding, too.

Situations in which we don’t entirely achieve what we set out for ourselves are often excellent learning opportunities. If you take the time thinking about your situation and what exactly happened, you will undoubtedly find things that worked well and some that didn’t.

Let’s see an example:

You attend the job interview and you don’t get the role. In black and white, it is a failure. You needed a job, you had the chance to present your fitness for the position, and you didn’t get the role. Straightforward failure. Or is it?

Think about the whole process:

  • Did you update your CV and did you include the relevant skills and experiences?
  • How did you prepare for the interview?
  • Did you do your research about the company?
  • Can you remember the great and the less pleasant moments of the conversation?
    If so, you can pinpoint when it didn’t work out so well.

People around you are telling you that you are not capable of accomplishing what you set out for yourself.

That is an interesting one because for that they must be in your shoes and they must live your life. Do they now?

Furthermore, they have to know you better than you know yourself. While there are people who have very little self-awareness, I don’t assume you are one. In fact, there is a tiny to zero chance that you are one. Do you know why? Because you are reading this article.

So why do these people tell you that you are not capable?

  • They might not have a good view of your situation.
  • They don’t know you very well yet.
  • They wouldn’t be able to successfully deliver in a similar situation and assume you wouldn’t be able to do that either.
  • They are worried about you because they think your goal is a considerable undertaking.
  • They underestimate you.
  • They are jealous.

These are just a couple of examples, but I am sure you get the picture. People around you may have several reasons to tell one thing or another, and it is up to you whether you let their opinion influence you and these things that hold you back. Find out here How do people drag you down? 

Your Fears

You don’t take on a new responsibility at your job because you fear you won’t meet the expectations. Question is whether you really know what the expectations are, or you assume what the expectations would be.

You would be surprised just how many times people assume certain things. They look at someone’s face or try to interpret their gestures; they don’t ask for performance indicators or success factors.

Take time and figure out where your fear is coming from, understand the aspects of your concern. Get to know your fear before you decide facing it.

Yes, the final step is facing your fear. Now, if you think about holding a spider in the palm of your hand; that is not what I meant.

Once you understand your fear and where it is coming from, you will be able to handle it, because you will be able to see the root cause and deal with it; and once you dealt with the root cause itself, the fear will fade away.
